MATTRESS GLOSSARY

COILS & SPRINGS

COIL COUNT: The number of inner-spring coils in a mattress. The standard for a double bed is 312.

COIL SPRING: Spirals of wire in varying heights, sizes and gauges which form the supportive structure of an innerspring mattress.

HELICALS: Wire spirals that usually hold together adjacent rows of coil springs.

INNERSPRING UNIT: The spring and wire unit made up primarily of coils, helicals and border rods which forms the heart of an innerspring mattress.

GAUGE: The thickness measure of the wire used in innerspring mattresses. A lower gauge denotes heavier wire.

FREE-END OFFSET COIL DESIGN: Coils unknotted with a free end at top and bottom, laced together with helical wires.

BOXSPRING: A boxspring is designed to support an innerspring mattress. A mattress and boxspring together comprise a sleep set (see innerspring unit).

TEMPERING: Tempering or stress relieving of coils, helicals, border rods, etc., with heat or electricity assures that the wire will return to its original height after compression.

COMFORTFLEX: Individually encased coils, not attached with a helical wire.

MATRESS SIZES

TWIN/SINGLE: A bed that measures 39 inches wide and 75 inches long.

DOUBLE: Also known as a full or regular size, a double bed measures 54 inches wide and 75 inches long.

DOUBLE EXTRA LONG: A bed that measures 54 inches wide and 80 inches long.

QUEEN: A bed that measures 60 inches wide and 80 inches long.

MATTRESS TERMS

CUSHIONING: Polyurethane foam, cotton felt or other materials that lie above the insulator and below the ticking in an innerspring mattress.

FIRMNESS: Firmness refers to the density of the foam used in the top quilting of the mattress. Designs with denser foam in the top quilting provide support with the least give and are considered harder in feel to other mattresses.

FOAM ENCASING: Foam section around perimeter of mattess made with super, high-density foam.

HIGH RESILIENCE: HR foam is a variety of polyurethane foam which is more supportive, comfortable and durable than conventional foams.

LATEX: A natural foam product often used to make premium quality latex foam mattresses.

PILLOWTOP: A pillowtop mattress includes a completely separate top section of the mattress. A pillowtop mattress will have an additional section of foam attached to the mattress to provide a plush feel on top while providing support through the innerspring bottom part of the mattress.

PRESSURE POINTS: The points at which capillaries will close due to pressure against the body. This undesirable effect can be reduced by a mattress that supports evenly.

QUILTING: Patterns that are sewn into the mattress ticking. For surface softness, many manufacturers quilt the ticking to soft urethane foam of varying thicknesses.

ANTI-MICROBIAL TREATMENT: Treatment applied to fibers and fabrics to inhibit exposure to dust mites, mold and fungi. Inhibits the growth of certain bacteria.

RESILIENCY: Surface liveliness and springback ability.

TICKING: Ticking is the outer fabric covering on a sleep set. These fabrics are often attractive prints or woven damasks.
